A representation of the popular portrayal of the Virgin Mary with her heart being pierced by a sword to show the suffering she endured as a mother in the name of her son and the larger good of man. From the Latin Mater Dolorosa, ‘Mother of Sorrows’ has come to be known by many terms. In the west it is commonly referred to as ‘Our Lady of Sorrows’ and is often illustrated with seven swords signifying the seven sorrows throughout her life, from the time of Christ’s circumcision (or the prophecy of Simon) until Jesus was laid to rest in his tomb. This piece, depicting her wearing monastic garmenting (like that of a nun), a cross hanging over her chest and a veil covering her head, is of Spanish origin and style, dating back to the 18th century.

Η Παρθένος Μαρία έχει καλυμμένη την κεφαλή με βέλο και είναι ενδεδυμένη τη μοναχική εσθήτα. Τη μοναχική της ιδιότητα υποδηλώνουν ο σταυρός στο στήθος της και το κομποσχοίνι που κρέμεται από το δεξί της χέρι. Μακρύ ξίφος διαπερνά την καρδιά της, με τη λύπη ζωγραφισμένη στο πρόσωπό της. Το έργο ανήκει στην « Ισπανική Σχολή » και χρονολογείται στον 18ο αιώνα.
