Title

Saints Constantine and Helen

Description

Greek Icon. 17th century. 20 x 28.5 cm
A 17th century traditional depiction of the emperor Saint Constantine and his mother Saint Helen, with the cross of Christ between them, the retrieval of which is accredited to Saint Helen who journeyed to Israel in order to find and return it to Christian lands, leaving small segments of it in all Christian countries and communities along her way. Cyprus was one such country and segments of the Holy cross can be found in numerous monasteries on the island such as Stavrovouni (the first place to retrieve a piece and which was named ‘mountain of the cross’ so as to reflect that), Omodos and Kykkos to name a few.
Εικόνα. 17ος αιώνας. 20 x 28.5 εκ
