Title

The Farewell of Saint Apostles Peter and Paul

Description

By Johann Beheim . Εtching/engraving print. 40.1 x 27.3 cm. 18th Century
A rare engraving print depicting St. Peter and St. Paul meeting in prison in Rome. This is considered a historic meeting of the two Apostles of Christianity. A style uncommon for Germany, this is an etching by the German artist Johann Beheim, dating back to the 18th century. A portrayal of Saint Paul, clutched upon an earthly prison guard, bidding farewell to his dear friend Saint Peter (believed to have died first), who is in the calling of a Heavenly angel. Both Apostles, Paul (beheaded) and Peter (crucified upside-down) were sentenced to death (and therefore martyred) within a relatively close period of time of one another. German (origin) art.

Johann Beheim. Χαλκογραφία. 40.1 x 27.3 εκ. 18ος αιώνας.
