Description

The story of Cyprus Airways, the National Airline, is one of birth, devastation, resurgence and success reliable airlines operating the most technically advanced aircraft. Its emblem is the stylized Moufflon of Cyprus. It began operations in 1948 with 3 21-seater Douglas Dakota aircraft. It operated from Nicosia airport providing services to Athens, Cairo, Haifa, Beirut, Istanbul and Rome. Within three years it added eight more destinations to its routes. As demand for air travel grew, more modern aircraft such as the Elizabethans and the Viscounts were introduced. In April 1960 it was the first airline to put into operation in this part of the world the Comet 4B jet aircraft capable of carrying 89 passengers. Its fleet of aircraft was continually updated until in 1974 the Turkish invasion completely crippled the airline's operations and the bombed Nicosia airport was closed and put under United Nations control. Cyprus was cut off from all air communications. Operations resumed in February 1975 with the opening of a makeshift airport at Larnaca, which in the ensuing years expanded tremendously and became an International Airport capable of handling the Company's Airbus aircraft. In 1997 Cyprus Airways celebrated 50 years of dedicated air services not only to the inhabitants of this island but also to nearly 1.7 million visitors who today come to our island in the sun. Cyprus airways continues to concentrate on improving customer services and establishing alliances with other national airlines to ensure its continued success in providing excellent air connections which currently cover 27 destinations in both East and West directions. Its fleet consists of two Airbus A330, two A319, eight A320 and one A330-200 the most modern in its series. A second A330-200 joins the fleet in 2003. The safety record of Cyprus Airways is unimpeachable.
