Description
Archangel Gabriel. The icon illustrated in this issue derives from the iconostasis of the Katholikon from the monastery of St.Neophytos, near Paphos. The 15m. stamp represents the Great Deesis in the uppermost zone of the iconostasis.The icon is dated to the year 1544 and attributed to the hand of Joseph Houris. It reminds one of the Palaeologue style and iconography but are related to the so-called Cretan school of the 16th century. (Extract from: The Painted Churches of Cyprus,
