Nativity, Christmas Issue Icons, Republic of Cyprus

Dublin Core

Title

Nativity, Christmas Issue Icons, Republic of Cyprus

Description

It derives from the iconostasis of the Katholikon from the monastery of St. Neophytos, near Paphos. The 150m. stamp is one of twenty one smaller icons in the middle zone depicting the twelve main feasts of the Church, and supplemented with further scenes from the Christological cycle and the Virgin's childhood. The icon is dated to the year 1544 and attributed to the hand of Joseph Houris. It reminds one of the Palaeologue style and iconography but are related to the so-called Cretan school of the 16th century.(Extract from: The Painted Churches of Cyprus, 2nd edition p.381)
