Queen Elizabeth II, eldest daughter of King George VI was born in 1926. In November 1947 she married Philip Mountbatten (created Duke of Edinburgh) and succeeded to the throne on 6th February 1952. Her coronation in June 1953 was the first to be televised. She has travelled extensively throughout the Commonwealth and is a strong believer in, and supporter of the Commonwealth ideals. In October 1993 she opened the 12th Commonwealth Heads of Governments meeting in Limassol, Cyprus.
