Famous 18th Century, Composers, Commemorative Issue

Description

Ludwig van Beethoven was born in Bonn, Germany, in 1770. He was of Flemish descent. His father and grandfather were court singers to the elector Archbishop of Bonn. No one doubts that he was one of the greatest composers of western classical music.

Around the age of 14 he travelled to Vienna where he met Mozart and Hayden with whom he studied. He composed brilliant and significant piano works and produced a series of masterpieces such as his Symphony No 3 Εroica originally dedicated to NapoleonBonaparte. He wrote nine symphonies and his 9th of 1824 erupts with the final movement’s “Ode to Joy” featuring a full choir and soloists and which is now used by the bureaucracy of the European Union to solicit enthusiasm for its existence. As early as 1796 Beethoven had noticed the first signs of deafness and by 1817 he was completely deaf. Inspite of his disability he composed some of the most sublime works ever created. In 1824 when Beethoven oversaw the first performance of his 9th Symphony, the soloists in the orchestra had to point out to him that the audience was applauding. He turned to see the silent applause just as he could not hear his own work being performed to such admiration.

Beethoven died in 1827 having created timeless musical works.
