Description
Τhe railway was in operation from 1905 to 1951 and as an innovative mode of transport and communication it contributed greatly to the economic and social life of the people. During its lifetime it carried 7,348,643 passengers and 3,199,934 tons of goods.
On 31st December 1951 the last three coach train left Lefkosia at 2.57 p.m. and when it arrived at Famagusta harbour at 4.38 p.m. it passed into history.
In 1972 the No.1 steam locomotive was eventually restored by Major B.S.Turner and A.E. Fletcher of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers of 48 Command Workshop at Dhekelia. It is now preserved at the entrance of the new city of Famagusta. (K.K.Keshishian, Lefkosia, Capital of Cyprus Then and Now, pp293-4)
