Title
Visit of Pope Benedict XVI, to Cyprus, Commemorative Issue
Description
For the first time in 2000 years, a Pope comes to Cyprus on a pilgrimage in the footsteps of Apostles Paul, Barnabas and Mark to visit Pafos where in 45 AD they converted the Roman Proconsul Sergius Paulus to Christianity.
The Pope, Bishop of Rome, as head of the Vatican City, the world’s smallest sovereign country, reigns as the proclaimed Vicar of Christ successor to Apostle Peter. He is the leader of more than 1.2 billion Roman Catholics. His reign of eight years was marred by scandals and internal upheavals leading him to become the first Pope in 600 years to resign. In 2011 and 2012 Benedict defrocked 400 priests for child abuses.
In 1939 extensive excavations ordered by Pope Pius XII led archaeologists to confirm that Emperor Constantine had built the first St. Peters Basilica on top of a necropolis. A hundred feet away from beneath the High Altar they found a 2nd century AD shrine built by the early Christians on a site where they believed St. Peter was buried. In 1968 Pope Paul VI stated that there were convincing reasons to believe that the set
of bones found nearby were the Apostle’s remains. However not everyone agrees.
