Title

Τhe Cyprus Railway, Commemorative Issue

Description

When Britain took over the administration of Cyprus from the Ottomans in 1878 it soon became clear to them that adequate road and communication systems were lacking. However, it was not until 1904 that a small six wheeled tank locomotive was imported from Leeds, England, and wagons from Egypt.

In 1905 they began construction of a railway of 2 feet & 6 inches gauge that would run from Famagusta harbour through Lefkosia to Morfou and Evrychou. The line was extended several times and finally covered a distance of 76 miles. An extension of the line
to Larnaka was turned down by the town’s mayor on the grounds that camel drivers would lose their means of living.

On 21st October 1905 the train made its maiden voyage from Ammochostos to Lefkosia. In its heyday there were about 30 intermediate stations connected by telephone and telegraph while some were also acting as postal agencies each with its own postal cancellation. Passengers, goods, animals and minerals were transported along the route.
