Description

The Football World Cup was first staged in 1930 in Uruguay. Since then football has become a globalised game that excites and attracts millions of fans from around the world. The Brazilians call it “jogo bonito”, the beautiful game.

In 2010 the FIFA World Cup Championship was held for the first time in South Africa, from 11th June to 11th July. It was in 2004 that FIFA had selected South Africa over Egypt and Morocco. The bidding process for hosting the tournament’s finals was open only to African nations.

The matches were played in 10 stadiums in 9 host cities around the country. The final was played at “Soccer City” stadium in Johannesburg. In the final, Spain, the European Champions, defeated third time finalist the Netherlands 1-0 after extra time, with Andres Iniesta’s goal in the 116th minute giving Spain their first World Title.

Spain as the winner received 30 million Dollars as prize money and the Netherlands received 24 million Dollars as the runner-up.
