Τhe World Exhibition is organized every five years and in 2010 it was held on the banks of the Huanghu river in Shanghai, China, from 1st May to 31st October. It was China’s first World Fair, the largest in history by size, attendance and international participants. The countries taking part had the opportunity to present their achievements, culture and civilization.
246 countries and international organizations were represented. The Republic of Cyprus had a pavilion of 428 sq. meters under the title “The House of Aphrodite”, where presentations were made covering the island’s cultural heritage, natural beauties, the way of life and the Cypriots’ vision of the future.
In the history of world fairs it was the most expensive. It attracted more than 73 million visitors. On 16th October over 1.03 million visitors attended. The theme “Better City Better Life” signified Shanghai’s new status in the 21st century as the world’s next great city.
At the ceremony held to celebrate the end of Expo 2010, Jean-Pierre Lafon, President of the International Bureau called it “An outstanding success”.
