Founded in 1873, the International Meteorological Organization (IMO) was the forerunner of the World Meteorological Organization ( WMO) which was established in 1950 and which became a specialized agency of the United Nations for meteorology (weather and climate), operational hydrology and related geophysical sciences. WMO provides the framework for inter national cooperation at global scale and contributes substantially to the protection of life and property against natural disasters and to the safeguarding of the environment. Its framework of programs help to enhance the well being of all sectors of society in areas such as water resources, food security and transport. In the case of weather natural disasters WMO ’s programs provide vital advance information and warnings that save lives and reduce damage to property and the environment. 187 States and Territories are members of the WMO. Its aims, among others, are to promote standardization of meteorological and related observations and their uniform publication; also to further the application of meteorology to aviation, shipping, water problems and agriculture. It also encourages research and training in meteorology and assists in coordinating the international aspects in the field of operations. WMO is a specialized agency of the United Nations and the Republic of Cyprus is a member of the organization.
