Description
Every nation has its heroes. Their last but simple words must overflow with love of their country and freedom. In this way they contribute to the great European ideal of freedom and patriotism. In Cyprus we have many heroes just as all the Europeans. However some heroes of the EOKA struggle were imprisoned, hanged and buried in the prison compound to avoid violent demonstrations. Also buried there are those exalted fighters who fell on the battlefield. They are still there; they are known as the "Imprisoned Graves". Michael Koutsoftas: The only words that the rulers can hear from our lips are: Freedom or death. The walls of this prison have also learnt these words. Andreas Zakos: The hour of death approaches, but in our souls peace nestles. Where I am now not even with a microscope can one find that there is tragedy in death. Iacovos Patatsos: I await the hour of the redeemer. I feel my soul leaping with joy. I await that hour that would fling me into the arms of the heavenly father. Charilaos Michael: Since I know the purpose of my execution, I feel strong and serene within myself; I am ready to confront everything with unbelievable coolness. Michael Karaolis: Do not mourn for me… since I can find no reason to cry for myself, neither should my own people cry Andreas Demetriou: I regret not seeing Cyprus free. However death does not scare me because life in slavery is superfluous. Stelios Mavromatis: Kill me, I am not afraid of you; there are many others behind me who will take my revenge. Evagoras Pallikarides: I shall make an ascent, I shall take a footpath to find the steps that lead to freedom. Andreas Demetriou Panagidis: Give courage to my wife and my children. Tell her that she does not lose me. My thoughts and my soul will always be with them.
