Description
The governments signatory to the European Convention on Human Rights, Rome, 4th November 1950, and its five protocols, being members of the Council of Europe and considering the Universal Declaration of Human Rights proclaimed by the General Assembly of the United Nations on 10th December 1948, agreed to take steps for the collective enforcement of certain of the Rights stated in the Universal Declaration. A few of these rights are enumerated below:
1. Everyone’s right to life shall be protected by law.
2. No one shall be subjected to torture or to inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.
3. No one shall be held in slavery or servitude.
4. No one shall be required to perform forced or compulsory labor.
5. Everyone has the right to liberty and security of person.
6. Everyone charged with a criminal offence shall be presumed innocent until proved guilty according to law.
7. Everyone is entitled to a fair and public hearing within a reasonable time by an independent and impartial tribunal.
8. Everyone has the right to respect for his private and family life, his home and his correspondence.
9. Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion.
10. Everyone has the right of freedom of expression. Any country seeking accession to the European Union must first ratify the European Convention on Human Rights.
