Title
Turkish Invasion and Violation of Human Rights, 20th Anniversary of the Turkish Invasion and Occupation of Cyprus, Republic of Cyprus
Description
No matter how deplorable one may consider the invasion and occupation of Cyprus to be, the most lamentable and unforgivable crime is the destruction of the island's cultural heritage in the occupied part of the island. When nations and peoples are proud to promote their culture, when the United Nations encourages and recognizes outstanding works of civilizations past and present, and records them in its World Heritage List, the invaders delight in destroying what they are incapable of creating. With a world turning a blind eye, churches are stripped of their treasures or turned intomosques, centuries’ old mosaics and icons are destroyed or plundered and all is done as a systematic erasure of a culture alien to the occupying forces. Mankind's barbaric instincts have not changed since the beginning of time, but will the 21st century herald a new beginning for humanity?
