Cyprus attained its independence in 1960, and as the Independent Republic of Cyprus became a member of the Commonwealth in 1961. Ever since then, Cyprus has been actively participating with other Commonwealth countries in promoting the common interests of all the people in all fields of human activity. Social justice, economic progress and development, agriculture and food production, education, health, and parliamentary affairs are but some of the areas which are monitored and reviewed to improve the quality of life of all citizens of the Commonwealth. The Commonwealth has consistently supported Cyprus in its endeavors to achieve a just and viable solution of the division of the island. The Commonwealth had constantly stressed the importance of securing compliance with United Nations Resolutions on Cyprus.
