Every two years top level personnel from the world of shipping, industry, banking, insurance, admiralty law, law enforcement, the European Union, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and other interested parties converge in strength on our beautiful island to hold ""Maritime Cyprus"". The 1999 meeting was held in Limassol and Glafcos Clerides, President of The Republic of Cyprus officially opened the conference. In the early eighties Cyprus ranked thirty second on the list of maritime nations, but now with more than 2,600 registered ships exceeding 24 million gross tons, it is ranked fifth in the world. Shipping is the only globalised industry in Cyprus and its contribution to the economy of the island is second only to the tourism industry. By 2003 it accounted for 2% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and was employing some 5,000 people. Cyprus’ "Open Registry" finally shed its "flag of convenience" label and possessing the sixth largest global fleet, had managed to turn one of the top three third party ship-management centers in the world.
