Description
In Cyprus, contemporary art began to take shape in the latter part of the 3rd quarter of the 19th century when painters of the caliber of Ioannis Kissonerghis and Vasilis Vryonides first began to present their works of art. They were soon followed by other painters of great ability such as Adamantios Diamantis and George Pol. Georghiou who laid the foundations for the next generation of painters. One such painter is Christoforos Savvas whose painting "Motherhood" appears on this 30 c. stamp. He studied art from 1947-1959 and lived in London and Paris where he broadened his knowledge and explored new means of expressions. He transformed and ushered a new period in Cypriot contemporary paintings. In his abstract paintings he gave a great deal of importance to color and shape and the interaction between them.
