Description

The Spanish city of Barcelona, hosted for the first time in three decades the first Olympic Games that were not marred by boycotts. The opening ceremony was the most spectacular and impressive ever staged. Athletes from most of the new countries of the former Soviet Union competed as a "Unified Team". Germany for the first time since 1964 competed as a unified country, while South Africa. The amateur rule that was overturned for the 1988 Games, allowed the United States to send a "Dream Team" of the most famous professional basketball players. Baseball, previously a demonstration sport, was added to the Olympic roster. The most outstanding personality of these Games was the gymnast Vitaly Sherbo of Belarus who won six gold medals. In all, approximately 9300 athletes participated, representing 169 countries.
