Fresco (Panagia of St. Nicolaos tis Stegis), Christmas and International Peace Year Issue, Republic of Cyprus
Description
Here we have a young shepherd playing an ordinary reed-pipe and wearing an unusual cap reminiscent of the ancient Greek traveler ’s hat, known as the petasos. This picture is but a small section from the 14th century fresco "" The Birth of Christ"" from the Church of St. Nicholas of the Roof, in the Byzantine village of Kakopetria. The church belonged to a monastic establishment, which came to an end in the second half of the 19th century, and none of the original monastic buildings have survived. The church is completely painted with frescoes dating bet ween the 11th and 17th centuries. These have been cleaned and preserved by the Department of Antiquities and are a delight to contemplate.
