The Spanish city of Barcelona, hosted for the first time in three decades the first Olympic Games that were not marred by boycotts. Germany for the first time since 1964 competed as a unified country, while South Africa. The amateur rule that was overturned for the 1988 Games, allowed the United States to send a "Dream Team" of the most famous professional basketball players. In all, approximately 9300 athletes participated, representing 169 countries.
