Title
Mother and Child, 40th Anniversary of U.N. High Commission for Refugees, Republic of Cyprus
Description
This dynamic and concise work is sketched in the contemporary perception of reductionism paintings. The painter gives us as many clues as we need to enable us compose freely and creatively within our own limitations and the painting’s viability. The clues are: colored bare feet; feet of various people walking, walking continuously, fleeing, fleeing away from destruction and death. Where they are heading is immaterial. What has meaning is salvation. Absent are the road, the surroundings and the rest of the body, which we have to sketch. The road can be anything; a road of thorns or sharply pointed stones, a road that bleeds their bare helpless feet; a road that sets out from their homes which are disappearing, burning; they are being erased for ever, devastated and receding far away into the unknown and the inhospitable. What links the surroundings can be anything; night or day it is of no importance. The rest of the body, also in the nude is tormented just as an apron in the wind, in the sun and in the rain. The cold makes it thirsty and hungry. Only, these bodies have a heart, and this heart is bleeding just as the feet are bleeding because it leaves behind all that it loves; its home, its school, its church, its dead, its way of life lost forever never to be recaptured. But these bodies also have a mind, a blank mind, for there is for them no tomorrow.
