Description

On this stamp we can see the pulpit of the Tripiotis church (Nicosia, Solon Street, near Laiki Yitonia). The Pulpit is a wood carved work of art of the 19th century. Christ and the four Evangelists are painted on it. The pulpit is par t of the interior decoration of a typical Orthodox Church (together with the Temple, the bishop’s throne and the Icon Stands). It is usually wood carved, and the deacon reads the gospel from here. Tripiotis church was built by Archbishop Germanos II in 1695 and was dedicated to Archangel Michael. It is an interesting example of the Franco -Byzantine style, and has an unusually wide, impressive temple with silver and gold covered icons. The rich interior, the temple, the gold and silver cored icons indicate that this was once a "society"" church.
