Title

Archbishop Makarios, 20th Anniversary of the Republic of Cyprus, Republic of Cyprus

Description

In the 20 years since its independence, Cyprus has had to provide significant improvements in the life of its citizens in spite of the destruction in 1974 resulting from the Turkish invasion, occupation of 37% of the land and appropriations of large productive regions and sources of wealth. In addition it had the obligation to care for some 210,000 refugees who were in need of housing, work , schools, hospitals and so much more that no one could imagine. In 1960, the Government inherited from the British administration an economy which was underdeveloped and lagging behind. Production was totally inadequate and the economic revival depended on unstable factors. Half the population was engaged in agriculture and contributed less than 20% of the national income.
Industry was restricted to the supply of agricultural needs. The reduction of expenditure by the British Forces, the international drop in the price of copper and drought resulted in unemployment and lack of temporary jobs. In the social sector the situation was tragic since only 43% of children bet ween the ages of 12-17 were attending a gymnasium. In the rural regions only 28% of houses had electricity and about 93% had no internal or external running water. In 1980, after 20 years of endeavors, Cyprus had changed its economic character. Tourist arrivals had increased tenfold from 24,000 to 240,000. Those engaged in agriculture now made up only 20% of the population. Gymnasium students who in 1959-1960 numbered only 14,649 at 19 schools, now in 1979-1980 they were 38,743 at 57 schools. In the rural regions all the houses now had electricity and running water. The Cyprus economy which was based on agriculture, had changed and had taken a new course, that of Service Industries which it has followed ever since.
