Title

Limassol Central Post Office, EUROPA Issue Post Office Buildings, Republic of Cyprus

Description

The architecture we see in this set of Post Office buildings, is typical of the architecture we observe in all parts of the world that have been influenced by the Greek ideas, local demands such as the weather, local traditions and their intended use. One of the main characteristics in architecture is the columns. The most classical and superb building with columns is the Parthenon. Just as a king (God on earth) has bodyguards to protect him, so does a God have need of bodyguards. The statue or icon of a God (which is to be found in a temple or a church) is therefore in need of bodyguards who are none other than the columns. These should not be too close to hinder the proach to God with ease, nor should they be too far apart that they project the impression of an unguarded God. The architecture which we can observe on the island has made use of columns extensively until the 2nd World War. The column has become a popular tradition, and among the sayings for a man, it is said :"You are the column of the house"; "You are the pillar of the house", i.e. the keeper of the traditions and values of the family. (see also the 1993 stamp, Pancyprian Gymnasioum).
