Title

International Literacy Year, International Anniversaries and Events, Republic of Cyprus

Description

During a recent trip to the supermarket in the neighborhood where we had just moved, an elderly lady approached me and politely asked if I could read her a label as she had forgotten her glasses. I did so with pleasure and she proceeded with her shopping. In the meantime I had noticed through the corner of my eye that the employee at the nearby counter had been gently but sadly shaking her head. As I approached the counter with some curiosity the employee asked me: "Did she forget her glasses?" Yes, I replied. The employee bent down slightly and whispered: "She cannot read". I was dumbfounded. It was then that I realized the difficulties that people like her have to face in their daily lives. They cannot read road signs, notices at airports or hospitals or even write a note. A person above the age of fifteen who can neither read nor write is said to be illiterate and in Cyprus 2% of men and 9% of women fall into this category.
