Title
30th Anniversary of E.O.K.A., International Anniversaries and Events, Republic of Cyprus
Description
In 1955, following many years of diplomatic efforts when Great Britain never accepted to discuss the question of self- determination (its answer was always a curt " the subject is closed"), and the United Nations for years did not make a stand, a proclamation by Dighenis was circulated to coincide with the issue coming before the United Nations Assembly. It said: "Its is time that we showed the world that if the international community is unjust and in many ways cowardly, that the Cypriot spirit is brave. If our rulers do not wish to grant us our freedom, we can lay claim to it with our own hands and with our blood. The struggle will be a hard one. The ruler exploits every means at his disposal while we apply the spirit and have justice on our side. For this reason we shall be victorious. It is a disgrace that in the 20th century the people have to shed their blood to attain their freedom; a freedom, which is God ’s gift, and for which we have fought against Nazism and Fascism. Greeks, wherever you are hear our voice. Let us go forward for the freedom of our Cyprus".
