Takis Evdokas in his book "How did we start and what do we seek (Feb.1976)"wrote: Anyhow- the word refugee has started to acquire a negative emotional feeling; it has become a somewhat sensitive issue. Under certain circumstances the refugee is considered as of low class, scorned as a second-class citizen"". When a number of refugees were asked, "How do others perceive you"? 28.7% replied: contented 22.6% replied: inferior, they mock us, they don’t want us, they spurn us. 12.7% replied: tramps, thieves 9.5% replied: they accuse us 4.7% replied: as rubbish, as nobodies 4.4% replied: as refugees 3.3% replied: as starving, they think we go begging 3.2% replied: they feel jealous of us 2.6% replied: they are tired of us 2.2% replied: they pity us 1.8% replied: they do not understand us; peculiar 4.6% replied some understand us others don’t 11.9% replied: I do not know 3.7% replied: I don’t care.
