Description

Butterflies are one of the most beautiful and fragile creatures in the entire animal kingdom.They are classified as insects and are diurnal as opposed to noc turnal. They belong to the order of Lepidoptera, which also encompasses moths. Butter flies and moths are the only insects whose wings are covered in scales. The word lepidoptera der ives from the Greek word lepis meaning scales and ptera meaning wings. The adult butter flies star t to emerge in February in the coastal areas and progressively until May on the highest peaks of Troodos. They can be easily spotted near to Coral Bay in Paphos as they fly about in large numbers. They can also be spotted in the Paphos and Limassol forests and in the Akamas peninsula.In Cyprus there are only 53 butterfly species, a very small number compared to 232 in Greece and 348 in Turkey.
