Description

The stamp commemorates the birth centenary of Nicos Kazantzakis (1883-1957) born in Heraklion, Crete, Greece; he studied law at Athens, spent some years travelling in Europe and Asia and published his first novel in 1929. He is best known for his novel "Vios kai politia tou Alexi Zormpa", (translated "Zorba the Greek" in 1946 and filmed in 1964) and the epic autobiographical narrative poem Odissia (translated, The Odyssey, a modern sequel in 1938) (Extract from: The Cambridge Biographical Encyclopedia) Kazantzakis is admired as a writer and poet not only in the Greek world but also beyond the shores of his homeland. He visited Cyprus and was concerned about its fate.
