Lord Robert Baden-Powell (1857-1941) was a professional soldier. He won fame when he masterminded the defence of Mafeking in the Transvaal during the Boer War. But he is best known as the founder of the Boy Scouts movement in 1908 and the Girl Guides in 1910. He was acclaimed World Chief Scout in 1920. His motto was: Dominus illuminatio mea – The Lord is my light.The Scout Oath: I swear on my honour that I will do my best to carry out my duty to God and my country, to help other people at all times and to obey the Scout Law. The Scout Law: A Scout’s word of honour is A Scout is loyal to God, his country, his parents and his supervisors and is fair to those under him. A Scout is useful and helps other people. A Scout is a friend to all and a brother to every other Scout. A Scout is kind to all.
A Scout loves and protects all plants and animals. A Scout is obedient to his parents and supervisors
without question. A Scout is thrifty. A Scout is pure and clean in thoughts, words and actions as well as in body. A Scout respects the words of others and recognizes his own abilities. A Scout is brave, magnanimous, self-confident, and decisive and takes responsibilities for his own actions.
