Dublin Core

Title

Virgin Mary and Child Between Two Archangels, Christmas Issue Fresco Paintings, Republic of Cyprus

Description

The wall paintings for this Christmas issue emanate from the Church of the Holy Cross of Agiasmati in the Troodos hills near the village of Platanistasa. Dedicatory inscriptions in the church inform us that it was built by donation of the chief priest Lord Peter son of Peratis and his priestess wife Perani.By deduction from an inscription still legible and by comparison with other paintings by the same painter, the year 1494 A.D. is attributed to both the church and the frescoes. The 10m stamp of the Virgin Mary attended by Archangels Michael and Gabriel is one of the finest paintings in the Church which is one of 10 churches on UNESCO ’s World Heritage List.
