Description
The Houses of Parliament stand on the banks of the river Thames in Westminster, London. The word parliament derives from the French ""parlement"" meaning discussion. The English Parliament differs from other medieval consultative assemblies by its composition of two chambers, where the Upper Chamber, The House of Lords, consists of landlords and lay and ecclesiastical persons, and the Lower Chamber, the House of Commons, consists of the elected representatives of the Kingdom. (Extract from: The History Today Companion to British History.) Forty-three Colonies and Protectorates issued identical stamps to commemorate Victory of the 2nd World War. Together with the Dominions of the Empire a total of 171 stamps were issued on this occasion.
