Description
The Buyuk Khan, or great inn, now lying in the buffer zone in the divided city of Nicosia, was originally a medieval building. It was re-built after 1570 and adapted as a khan. In the middle is a vast courtyard surrounded by rooms on the ground and upper floors. The upper rooms were used for guests while the rooms on the ground floor were used as shops or stores. After 1878 and until 1893 it was used as a prison. Until the 1950s one could still see traders driving their camels into the courtyard. In 1963 it was classified as an ancient monument, to be restored as a museum of Turkish and Islamic Art.
