Albert, younger son of King George V ascended to the throne upon abdication of his elder brother King Edward VIII on December 11th 1936. He became King George VI. His coronation in Westminster Abbey was on 12th May 1937. In the Second World War the Queen remained in London during the Blitz and refusing to leave England to seek safety for herself and her children said: ""The Princesses would never leave without me and I couldn't leave without the King, and the King will never leave.""
