On 4th March 1964, the Security Council adopted unanimously Resolution 186(1964) whereby noting the situation with regard to Cyprus: Called upon all members to refrain from the threat of use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any State, as well as any action or threat of action that would worsen the situation of the sovereign Republic of Cyprus, or endanger international peace.Recommended the creation of a United Nations Peace Keeping Force in Cyprus for a period of three months whose main objectives would be the preservation of international peace and security, the prevention of a recurrence of fighting and the maintenance and restoration of Law and Order.Recommended that the Secretary-General designate a mediator in agreement with the Governments of Cyprus, Greece, Turkey and the United Kingdom to promote an agreed settlement of the problem confronting Cyprus, all in accordance with the charter of the United Nations and the well being of the people as a whole.
