It was here on the former Constanzo Bastion that on the 9th September 1570 during the siege of Nicosia that the first standard bearer scaled the high Venetian walls and planted his flag. He was killed and buried on the spot. His tomb is now within the picturesque mosque built in 1820 by the then Turkish governor. Bairaktar means standard-bearer in Turkish.
