The Durbar was a spectacular show of celebrations which took place in the presence of the British Viceroy, Maharajahs and Indian Princes in their bejewelled splendour, high court judges in their state robes, military officers in brilliant uniforms, distinguished guests from all parts of India, England and Foreign States and crowds in their thousands. Various events and processions took place and the Imperial Cadet Corps, on their black chargers, seated on white leopard-skins, in their blue and silver unifor ms where a dazzling picture from some fairy tale. A state ball followed in the inner court of the Marble Palace where the great Moghuls had their throne. It was a spectacle never to be forgotten. (Extract from: Rodger Hudson, The Raj, Folio Society)
