Title

Centenary of Anorthosis, Famagusta, Commemorative Issue

Description

With this issue, Cyprus Post celebrates the centenary of the Anorthosis Football Club which since its foundation in 1911 has been an energetic contributor to both the sporting and cultural life of the country.

In 1934 it became one of the founding members of the Cyprus Football Association. Its home ground in Amochostos is the G.S.E stadium. After the Turkish invasion of 1974 its temporary home ground is the Antonis Papadopoulos Stadium in Larnaka.

Throughout its history, the club never played in the 2nd division. In fact it has won 13 first division titles, 10 Cyprus Cups and 7 Super Cups. It won the domestic league 2007-2008 and qualified for the 2008-2009 UEFA Champions League Group Stage, becoming the first Cyprus team to attain this stage. They played well and had the chance to make it to the knock-out stage had they won and not drawn against Werder Bremen. Unfortunately it was not to be. Nevertheless Anorthosis was a worthy ambassador of Cyprus on the European Football Scene and deserves all the fans’ congratulations.
