Title

Viticulture Cyprus-Romania, Commemorative Joint Issue

Description

Τhe wild vine, Vitis vinifera silvestri, from which the cultivated vine of the old world is derived has been established in Armenia as in the Balkans and parts of Western Europe since Tertiary times; that is to say over a million years ago. The Book of Genesis (IX.18-29) records that one of Noah’s first actions after alighting from the Ark on Mount Ararat was to plant a vine. (Professor Lang, Armenia Cradle of Civilization p.67).

The earliest evidence of wine making has been found in the Zagros mountains in Iran dating from 4500 BC (Scientific American Sept.2013). On 2nd January 1473, Queen Caterina Cornaro appointed Peter Davila as Constable of Cyprus and gave him among other things the Armenian vineyard in Agios Dometios.(Dawkins, The chronicles of George Boustronios 1456-1489).

In Greek mythology the poets say that Dionysos gave man the vine and its fruit, the grape, so that he was also the spirit of drunkenness.
