400th Birth Anniverary of Rembrandt, Commemorative Ιssue

Description

Rembrandt van Rijn was born in Leiden, Holland on 15th July 1606. His father was a miller and his mother the daughter of a banker. In 1631 he went to Amsterdam as a young printmaker, painter and etcher and opened a workshop taking on numerous pupils.

In the 1650s his etchings and prints earned him international recognition. The “Three Crosses”, one of his most famous etchings depicts Christ’s death on the cross when the gospels say the sun had darkened.

As a painter he was highly skilled and versatile. He painted scenes from the bible and mythology
and became well known for his portraits. In 1642 he painted his most acclaimed group portraiture known
as the “Night Watch” which today has pride of place at Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum.

The 40c stamp depicts one of his last self-portraits painted in 1669 and in the background is the painting
of “The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp 1632” which hangs at the Mauritshuis in the Hague.

Rembrandt died on 4th October 1669 and was buried in an unknown grave in the Westerkerk.
