Description
The 18th FIFA World Cup was held in Germany from 9th June to 9th July 2006. The vote to choose the hosts was held in 2000 in Zurich, Switzerland and the bidding countries were: Germany, England, South Africa and Morocco.
Thirty two countries took part and the games were played at different stadiums. However the Olympiastadion with a capacity to hold 74,176 spectators was not used. In this tournament the youngest player was 17 years old and the oldest 37. Germany’s Miroslav Klose scored 5 goals and was able to claim the “Golden Boot”. The games set an unprecedented record of 345 yellow cards and 28 red cards being shown to players.
Italy won for the 4th time by defeating France 5-3 in a penalty shoot-out.
The final had attracted a worldwide audience of some 715 million people.
