Title

Dogs in Man’s Life, Thematic Issue

Description

The evolution of dogs goes back millions of years before our ancestors some 14,000 years ago managed to domesticate the wolf by adopting wolf pups or by allowing them to scavenge from human leftovers. Succeeding generations became increasingly tame and with the ability to eat in proximity of humans, they gradually became inter-dependant with humans
and could no longer exist without them. Today we refer to a dog as man’s best friend.

Breeding has created a large variety of dogs from the Pomeranian to the Siberian huskey. Over the centuries humans began to create desirable traits and variations in shape and colour to meet their needs be they for hunting or racing. The German shepherd shown on the 13c stamp is an excellent watchdog which can also be trained for police rescue work.

Throughout all these millions of years the DNA make-up of the wolves and the dogs remains almost identical.
