Description

In the beginning and until the middle of 20th century, Agios Athanasios was a small rural community that has been evolved into a small village with a population of 400 people. The residents’ main occupation was agriculture particularly the production of carob, cereals crops, livestock, as well as quarrying and stone gypsopetras (matsarangas) for building works (houses, schools, churches). Lime industry was also one of the main occupations of the inhabitants which led to an increased number of lime quarries and lime kilns in the area. Also, many residents were lumberjacks and supplied the town of Limassol with firewood.
