Description

In the Montreal Games of 1976 the workers’ trade unions staged many and successive strikes thus compelling the Government, which feared the danger of the Games being cancelled, to advance large sums of money and benefits which combined with the efforts of the influential Mayor led to such an economic predicament that for years to come the Canadians were burdened with a huge debt. As a result many cities later declined to host the Olympics. Politics once again embroiled the Games when 24 African countries abstained from taking part in protest against the inclusion of New Zealand whose rugby team had toured racist South Africa which in turn had been excluded from the 1964 Games for just those racist policies. The outstanding personality of these Games was the Romanian Nadia Comaneci who enthralled the judges and the public with her perfect execution of the rhythmical gymnastics, earning her the gold medal with the unprecedented maximum 10 points from each and every one of the judges. Her momentous performance transformed gymnastics into a popular world sport.
