Description
In the 18th Century John Heyman, Professor in the University of Leiden, Holland, during his travels to Egypt, Syria, Palestine etc. visited Cyprus and noted that corn was ground by watermills so that in times of drought there was not only a want of water but also of bread. Michael de Vezin, Consul for Aleppo and Cyprus had noted that in Citherea (Kythrea) there existed 32 watermills for grinding corn. (Excerpta Cypria pp.247 & 373) In 1220 Queen Alice of Cyprus had granted the Archbishop of Nicosia the free use of the mills of Kythrea for the redemption of the soul of her husband King Hugh. (R. Gunnis, Historic Cyprus p.308)
