Title
100 Years European Cinema, International Anniversaries and Events, Republic of Cyprus
Description
The first cinematographic pictures were shown in Denmark in 1896 and in 1912 the biggest cinema with a seating capacity of 2,400 was opened in Northern Europe. In the late twenties and early thirties the transitional period from "silent" to "sound" films was problematic for cinemas everywhere. By the early 1950 s cinemas formed a huge part of the entertainment business and in Cyprus open air cinemas were very popular. Statistics of the film industry in Europe collated in 1992 and 1994 showed that cinema admissions peaked in 1953 with just under 59 million tickets being sold. But with the introduction of television in the mid 1950 s cinema attendances went into decline. The decline was accelerated when films became available on videotapes. As evidenced by the European statistics (1950-1994) cinema attendances have been falling ever since 1953, with the lowest fall in number being registered in 1992. The European trend was reflected in Cyprus too and many cinemas had to close down. A revival in cinema attendances has been noted in recent years and today cinema goers in Cyprus enjoy the latest releases at the same time as the rest of Europe.
