Title
Statue of Liberty, Nicosia, 40th Anniversary of the EOKA Liberation Struggle, Republic of Cyprus
Description
On 1st April 1955, the inhabitants of Nicosia were awakened by the bewildering sounds of explosions, which soon turned out to be the first shots in an armed struggle against colonialism. This monument known as the "Statue of Liberty" erected on the ramparts of the historic Venetian walls that encircle the old cit y of Nicosia, not only honors the fighters that gave their lives almost half a century ago, but stands as a reminder to current generations that the struggle continues even today even though on the diplomatic arena, to establish a united, independent state, free from foreign occupation where all the inhabitants live in peace and harmony irrespective of race, creed or religion.
